Warksburn Old Church (Dr Anne James & Dr Alan James)
Warksburn Old Church is a spectacular luxury holiday rental property at Wark, close to Hadrians Wall, Hexham, and Kielder in rural Northumberland, England. The property sleeps up to six guests in three individually-styled bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. During 2023-24 it was converted from a redundant Presbyterian church, which was originally built in 1875.
The £1m renovation programme not only created a truly extraordinary place for up to six guests to enjoy a wonderful holiday, but also delivered the world’s first ever conversion of a former church into a Net Zero home which meets the extremely demanding Passivhaus retrofit (EnerPHit) standard for super-insulation, airtightness, and ultra-low energy consumption. It also achieved the exceptional result of 0.19 ACH on Final Airtightness Test, beating the required standard for a new build Passivhaus in the more complex and challenging context of a retrofit project.
The reborn Warksburn Old Church now supports the wider Passivhaus movement in two ways. Firstly, booking a stay enables guests to experience for themselves how the highest levels of comfort and luxury can be achieved in a Net Zero Passivhaus-certified building, whilst enjoying a holiday in beautiful and historic Northumberland. Secondly Anne and Alan can provide an “informed client” advisory service to people or organisations considering a Passivhaus (or low energy) retrofit of their own property – so that you’ll know the right questions to ask when you start the process, and the right things to keep under close quality control as your build progresses.
